Canterbury J Class Winter Series.

Race day one, Westlake Reserve, June 23rd 2019.

Day one of our new event series at our new venue and it went “pretty OK”, just a bit of a shame about the wind but not much we can do about that, we did ask for better!

Firstly, a big vote of thanks has to go to Paul Johnson and the Pegasus Radio Sailing Club for the ongoing loan of their inflatable, the loan of this has made life very easy.

Our numbers at 16 were pretty good and probably about right for the venue. We did not overload and flood the place with cars, boats and people, everyone behaved in an exemplary manner and showed ourselves as a pretty sensible lot appreciating the position we have to be sailing there, great stuff.

Was good to see some of you chat with several of the local community who stopped for a talk, thanks for that. One person I spoke with expressed concern about the resident swans and explained their nesting habits to me but we parted company with a joke and a smile and she was pretty happy.

We did something a little bit different with this event, the day being something between twilight sailing and the Auld Mug with only the one Race Official and it worked quite well, thanks to Graeme R for not sailing and assisting.

With future events we have the option of following this pattern or we might try the day with no appointed Race Officer but have one participant do duty for one heat only, take average points for that missed heat and share the role amongst the others.

We all want to continue to sail there, the last thing any of us want to do is to defend our actions, argue our case for the future or worst position, lose the venue entirely, lets make sure we do the same next time.

Thanks to all for an enjoyable (windless) day,

On behalf of the CJCOA committee,

Leon.
